Canada Votes (Again)

“Many seek the face of a ruler but justice comes from the LORD.” (Prov 29:26)

 “We’re not in Kansas anymore,” are the famous words issued by Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. Looking at Canadian politics through the lens of Christ this couldn’t be more true. What is very evident is that no major party remotely represents a Christian worldview; in fact some are hostile to Christianity. So, how is the Christian to wisely exercise their civic duty, which is the means by which God appoints elected officials in His Providence?

Here are some possibilities and we’ll end with some principals:

1. You could vote for the colour you’ve always voted for (yet the meaning of those colours have changed and we need to recognize that)
2. You could vote for X so Y doesn’t get in (not principled but strategic)
3. You could vote for the most preferred candidate even if there are no preferred candidates (the least ‘evil’)
4. You could vote based on the candidates hair (not the most discerning but some do it anyway)
5. You could vote for the local candidate, irrespective of their national party (however, unless they are an independent they are usually bound by the party whip)
6. You could vote based on a single issue (recognizing that the totality of the parties platforms don’t align with Scripture)
7. You could vote for the candidate you feel would be least harmful to Canada and Christians
8. You could vote for the candidate you feel would be most sympathetic to Christians and truth
9. You could vote for the candidate who most champion’s religious liberty and would protect the interests of Christians
10. You could register a vote of discontent by striking a line through the boxes and writing in capitals NONE (thus voting but not endorsing any, making a statement nevertheless)

Those are some possible ways you could vote; what about principles?

1. Recognize that salvation doesn’t come through politics but the Gospel and pray that the Lord would help you understand and be convicted of this.
2. Ask, which vote would most glorify God?
3. Ask, which vote would best protect our religious freedoms?
4. Ask, which vote would most advance Christian interests and the Gospel?
5. Pray that the Lord would give you great wisdom.

Monday will be here before we know it and though an unexpected and unwanted election there is no doubt it will shape our country for years to come. May the Lord have mercy on Canada!
